The Langtang region is the most accessible alpine region from Kathmandu. On clear days you can see the glaciated peaks of Langtang from the Kathmandu valley. It’s a jeep ride to get to Syabru Besi (1503m) the start of our adventure, no flight required.

Langtang is a narrow valley between the main Himalayan range to the north and a slightly lower shower range to the south. It is home to Tamangs whose religious practices, rich Buddhist culture and traditions are very similar to the bordering Tibet. The valley was recently reopened for visitors after devastating effect of 2015 earthquake, but there are still far fewer trekkers than Everest or Annapurna regions.

This trek is an excellent opportunity to explore local villages, scramble small peaks and visit glaciers at relatively low elevations — most of the trekking is below 4000m.

PLAN

After reaching Kyanging Gompa we spend several days exploring Langshisa Kharka (4285m), extensive Langtang Glacier (system 4800m) and enjoying the views of the snowcapped Langtang Lirung, Gang Chhenpo and Dorje Lakpa.

Langtang National Park (established in 1971) is home to Red Panda, Snow Leopard and Himalayan Thar. According to the legend, a lama following a runaway yak discovered the valley. In Tibetan ‘Lang’ means ‘yak’ and ’teng’ or ‘dhang’ – ‘follow’.
