What I love about Ladakh is its depth. The setting of this trek is on the high Changtang plateau, which is called “the roof the world” in modern media. The Changtang is located on the northern side of the Himalayas and thus is in a rain shadow from the summer monsoon rains in Nepal and further East.  When you land in Leh to start this trek, you are already at 3700 meters. The first day we relax and drink lots of water and fresh juice to adjust to the altitude. We usually go for a short walk to see the bazaars of Leh for the first evening, and then have a meal of Tibetan food before retiring for the evening. From there the adventure begins, we’ll chat with wise monks in their intricately carved temple rooms, walk beneath trees planted by the founder of Sikhism, browse through shops with hundreds of years old turquoise necklaces and pashmina, trek over 5000 meter passes, and sleep under millions of stars (we see the Milky Way) every night.

You’ll be enjoying our homemade Asian trekking cuisine for the duration of the trip. Mostly vegetarian, a typical dinner has rice or chapattis with three to four North Indian dishes such as Rogan Josh, Palak Paneer, Moong Dal, or Kashmiri Dum Aloo. We also have surprise nights of pizza or Tibetan momos. Breakfasts are fresh fruit, muesli, oatmeal, eggs to order, homemade bread, local homemade apricot jam, and local yoghurt (our favorite). Lunches are fresh fruit, rice or pasta, yak cheese, cookies/biscuits, mixed nuts and fresh salad. Guests have always loved our trekking meals and we think you will too. Get in touch with us to chat about joining us for this adventure.

Domesticated yaks are actually a cross breed of a yak and a cow. Called a dzop-kio, they are more tame, can descend below 3000 meters, and also provide milk for cheese and yoghurt to families. You’ll get to experience all of this first hand on this trek.
The headwaters of the Indus River.
Trails leading to 6000 meter peak climbs.

We begin with acclimatizing for a couple of days in the culturally rich Indus valley, then to trek into the Rupshu range and make a traverse of three 5000 meter passes as we visit with the fascinating Changpa nomads and their yaks, see the brackish lakes of eastern Ladakh, and all with great food and sound guidance. Spectacular Tso Kar lake was the source for salt for locals for centuries from as far as 320 kilometers away.

Go downhill mountain biking from a 5000 meter pass (!)
The verdant field of Leh. Leh is a historic stop on the ancient Silk Route. What we love about Leh is the Tibetan and Ladakhi food, the handicrafts of the bazaars, and the fascinating nearby Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.
6000 meter + Stok Kangri peak dominates the skyline above Leh. We also have plans to climb this peak during summer 2019. If you have less time available for a holiday this is a great option for achieving a 6000m peak in less than two weeks. Check out that trip on our expeditions page.

SAFETY

Trekking over passes at 5000m / 17,000ft is no place to be short on resources. We make the proper advance preparations to ensure that you will be properly cared for, from airport to trek to airport.  Our trips are very small groups of 2-5 people. This enables us to truly shape your trek to fit your exact interests.

LEADERSHIP

Kunsang Thakchod will be leading this trek alongside with his top notch local team. Kunsang has worked as a trekking guide with Himalaya Alpine Guides for 6 years now and in the Himalayas for 14 years. Kunsang hails from Himachal Pradesh, India and is fluent in Tibetan, Hindi and English.

Changtang ponies carry your personal belongings, the food, and the tents for this trekking adventure. You carry a light pack with sunscreen, water, a rain jacket (it rarely rains in Ladakh, lots of sunny days with a light breeze), and don’t forget your camera.
A 6300m peak (!). You have the option to hike a 6000m peak while on your trekking trip. There are easy walkups along the route and also peaks that require crampons and an axe. You can choose which you’d prefer and discuss with us if this is something you’re keen on. If some choose to peak climb then the others usually relax by the river and read a book or visit with the local nomads and experience how they make their own yogurt.
Challenging to see, but there is a nomadic Changpa camp here. Experience their way of life on your trek.

A well-rounded Himalayan experience complete with indigenous culture, trekking and all the amenities to keep you at your best. Join us.
