Karma Samtuk Gurung is a trekking guide and leader with Himalaya Alpine Guides. He hails from the Lopa village of Samar in Mustang.  Karma’s trekking specialties include Mustang, Everest , Annapurna, around Dolpo, and Langtang-Helambu region.  Karma’s attention to detail, personability, and resourcefulness in the remote Himalayas make him a cut above other trekking guides.  He looks forward to showing you his home mountains and providing you a trip of a lifetime. Karma is a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and has extensive experience in medical relief work in off the beaten track locales of Nepal. He resides for the majority of the year in California, and returns each trekking season to his homeland.

Danika Gilbert – Mountain Guide

Background

Danika Gilbert is passionate about sharing her love of the outdoors, whatever the activity. From trekking, mountain biking, rock and ice climbing, backcountry skiing to mountaineering and technical alpine climbing, she leads with ease, excellent technical skills, and enthusiasm. Danika loves helping others reach their dreams and challenge themselves. Clients love her in-depth knowledge of the outdoors, comfortable presence, patience and zeal for sharing with others what she so clearly loves herself. Her climbing resume includes summits around the world including: Italy, Switzerland, France, Peru, Bolivia, Nepal, Pakistan, Greenland and the U.S., including many first ascents. Danika is a bit of a natural history and science “geek” with a Masters in Botany, specializing in alpine and desert plants, and did Ph.D studies in Biogeochemistry. She loves to travel, with climbing as an excuse to explore other mountains and mountain cultures. Danika lives in Ridgway, CO nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains.

Background

Dave Penney is a talented climber and skier with extensive experience in technical guiding (30+ years) all over the planet, on trips ranging from assisting a parapalegic up Mt. Kilimanjaro, to scaling difficult ice and rock climbs.   His patience, calm demeanor, and compassion enable him to make the big decisions on expeditions when the going gets tough.  He has an intuitive sense for the individual needs of each climber and how to adapt to enable everyone to succeed at reaching their goals and dreams.

Luke Smithwick – Mountain Guide

Background

Luke Smithwick is the owner and founder of Himalaya Alpine Guides. He works for the majority of the year in India and Nepal leading expeditions for Himalaya Alpine Guides. Since the age of 18, his chief profession has been guiding. Now, he is happiest when working in the Himalayan back-country and is equally comfortable leading in trekking shoes, climbing boots, or with skis on. His expedition experience includes Everest from Tibet (Northeast ridge), Shishapangma (Northwest buttress), Denali (west buttress, traverse), Himlung, and too many Himalayan 6000 meter peaks to mention. He prides himself on providing top notch trips at international guiding standards with an emphasis on each members personal goals.

 

Luke says: “I see the Himalaya as the most intriguing place on the planet, and from the high mountains to the deep culture and history, the Himalaya really do have it all. There is no place I’d rather be than in the mountainous regions of Nepal, India, and Tibet. I look forward to enjoying your trip with you. My specialties are leading glaciated traverses of the Great Himalaya range, peak exploring in the remote Himalaya, and focused expedition and alpine climbs.”
